Youth Uplift Challenge: Meet Yasmir
The Youth Uplift Challenge is supporting Save the Children's youth opportunity programs in Nicaragua and Indonesia. We're excited to bring you to these countries to meet a few inspiring students finding success! In this blog post, Abby of Global Nomads Group shares some behind the scenes insight into Nicaraguan student Yasmir's daily life.
Over 2,600 ft. above sea level, tucked into the mountains of Nicaragua, surrounded by coffee plantations, we were welcomed into the comfortable home & loving Rivera family. In the kitchen we were greeted by Lucia, Yasmir’s mother, and a burning wood stove for cooking. Looking around, it was hard to miss artwork (done by Yasmir and his eldest brother) hanging on the walls.
Besides the obvious generosity of hosting us in their home, we also had the opportunity to learn about Yasmir’s family and life. One of the most notable things was how the family worked together to harvest coffee as their livelihood. It was amazing to see the red berries that hold the coffee beans (I am so accustomed to seeing roasted and ready for brewing), the way Yasmir and his siblings picked them, and all the other steps that goes into the process.
Yasmir’s desire to learn and progress in his studies and in his work was really remarkable. Through Save the Children’s programming Yasmir has been able to deepen his education and become empowered by what he is learning. He currently increasing his ability to manage his family’s coffee business through his involvement with Save.
